With incredible beaches, delicious food and bags of culture, the Greek islands are amongst the most charming places in Europe. And whilst every island has its own unique charm, there are some that are more suited to a romantic break than others.
In this guide, I’ll cover my 7 favourite islands for couples, including Santorini, Milos and lesser known Syros. You’ll also learn about the best places to eat and sleep on each island, as well as the best things to do whilst you’re there (from my experience).
Plus, I’ll give you some handy tips I wish I’d known before I visited Greece, because I know that planning the perfect trip can be overwhelming.
But don’t worry, I’m here to make it easy! Ready to learn about the best Greek islands for couples? Let’s go.
The 7 best Greek islands for couples
1. Milos
The best Greek island for couples who like beach days
- Visit the beach that looks like the moon
- Wander around the charming towns of Pollonia and Plaka
- Take a boat trip to Kleftiko
In my opinion, Milos takes the number one spot on the list of the best Greek islands for couples. Think crystal-clear waters, hidden coves and dramatic landscapes. It doesn’t get much more romantic.
If you can, I’d strongly recommend hiring a car in Milos.
It’s the island of beaches, and having a car will give you complete freedom to explore on your own schedule.
I use Discover Car whenever I’m hiring a car abroad. They compare lots of different providers and find you the best price. Plus, I’ve never had any bad experiences where they won’t give you your money back at the end like you sometimes hear about with dodgy car hire companies.
The process is always really simple and stress-free. Which is exactly what I want when I’m on holiday, thank you.
The best beaches on Milos
SARAKINIKO
Probably the most famous beach on the island, its formed from grey volcanic rock that give it a moon-like appearance, and it’s the most unique beach I’ve ever visited. Sarakiniko is a really popular spot for cliff jumping, but be warned, it’s a lot higher than it looks!
PAPAGRAGKAS
I’d say this is more of a cove than a beach, and the climb down is VERY dodgy. I hate heights so there’s no way I was ever going to do it. Instead, a small opening to the right allows you to swim round.
It is quite a long way so I’d only recommend it if you’re a strong swimmer. But it’s worth it once you’re there, it feels like a true slice of paradise.
TSIGRADO
Accessed by a rope ladder that dangles from the rocks, this tiny beach is undoubtedly one of the most stunning on the island. If you’re a couple that enjoys a challenge, you’ll love Tsigrado.
FIROPOTAMAS
Firopotamos was my favourite beach in Milos. This idyllic fishing village has some of the bluest water I’ve ever seen.
The small bay is tucked away in a remote destination on the North of the island. The shore is lined with fishing huts (some you can even stay in), and it truly is heaven on earth.
KLIMA
This colourful fishing village is one of the most picturesque spots on the island. There’s not much to do here but swim and watch the world go by, but that doesn’t sound like a problem to me.
KLEFTIKO
This famous cove is one of the most popular attractions in Milos. You can only access it by boat – spend the morning swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear water, or relaxing on the beach.
Things to do on Milos
Most guides to Milos will be centered around staying in Pollonia, Plaka or Adamas. For a couples getaway, I’d recommend Pollonia, a stunning fishing village on the North of the island.
It’s less crowded than Adamas and Plaka, but still home to great restaurants and a quiet buzz.
It’s just my opinion, so take it as you will, but I’d wouldn’t spend much time in Adamas. It’s the first place you see when you arrive in Milos, as it’s where the ferry port is located, but it’s hectic and slightly too touristy. It doesn’t allow you to really get to know Milos.
But definitely make sure you take a day trip to Plaka, it’s the capital of Milos and its hilltop position lends itself to incredible views of the Aegean sea.
Dedicate a morning to visiting the small fishing village of Mandrakia. It’s home to Medusa, one of the most famous restaurants on the island. Famed for its fresh seafood, you’ll often see a whole Octopus hanging out to dry, ready to be served to hungry tourists.
If you’re looking for a fun date night activity, Milos cave winery is the only winery on the island. They serve snacks and a selection of wines, all made in their vineyards.

2. Mykonos
The best Greek island for couples who like a night out
- Spend the days at world-famous beach club Scorpio’s
- Grab a cocktail at Negrita’s
- Explore the charming streets of Mykonos Old Town
I’ve made my opinions on Mykonos clear in previous blogs about Greece, it was a LOT of fun, but I don’t know if I’d be in a hurry to go back.
To me, it felt slightly like Disneyland, as if everything was put on for the tourists. But, that being said, I still think everyone should experience it at least once.
Out of our whole 2 week island-hopping trip, we had some of the best days in Mykonos. The bars are amazing and it’s the perfect island if you’re the kind of couple that partying together.
You can’t miss a day at world-famous Scorpio’s beach club, but make sure you book in advance because this place is popular.
Stop for a drink at Negrita’s – a Mykonos institution right on the waterfront.
Pay a visit to Kastro’s and Katerina’s too, both beautiful bars overlooking the sea.
If you’re not tired from all the partying, Principote beach club another must-do. You’ll have seen this place on Instagram – after food, it turns into a huge party, with napkin waving, plate smashing and table dancing.
Beyond the nightlife, there’s lots to see and do as well. You can’t leave Mykonos without visiting the iconic windmills. Built in the 16th century, they utilised the islands very windy climate to mill wheat and agricultural products that were then shipped off the island.
These days, there’s 16 windmills remaining, but the most famous are the 7 windmills you’ll see lined up overlooking the sea in Mykonos Old Town.
If you’re a couple that likes good food, Mykonos is a great choice. Book a date night dinner at M-eating, Pili Mykonos, Hippie Fish, or Beefbar.
If it’s a special occasion, there’s nowhere more special than Nero Nero. Arrive either by private boat or candle-lit steps to this private dining experience over the sea.

3. Paros
The best Greek island for couples who want a more affordable Mykonos
- Discover the harbour town of Naoussa
- Wander the charming streets of Lefkes
- Take a boat trip to Antiparos
If you’re looking for somewhere similar to Mykonos, without the price tag, and in my opinion, prettier, Paros is the perfect choice.
There’s lots of amazing bars and places to eat, but it still maintains its charm and authenticity. I’d recommend staying in the harbour town of Naoussa, there’s a buzzy atmosphere, but you’re within easy reach of some of the island’s best beaches.
Don’t miss dinner at Stilvi – an open courtyard restaurant with an impeccable menu. Yemeni is another excellent choice, serving traditional Greek cuisine in a beautiful setting.
After dinner, head to Linardo for a drink, the famous pink and white bar you’ll have seen all over Instagram. There’s lots of other great bars in Paros, including Fotis, Agosta, Sommaripa Consolato, Trickster Bar.
My number 1 recommendation of things to do in Paros is to hire an ATV and visit Lefkes. Surrounded by mountains and olive groves, this quintessential Greek village has a completely different feel to Naoussa.
It’s one of the most romantic places we visited during our 2-week trip, expect whitewashed streets, flowering bougainvillea and charming Greek houses.
Make sure you spend a day visiting Parikia, the capital of Paros. With it’s whitewashed idyllic old town, boutique shops, and beautiful port, it’s well worth a trip.
If you fancy a slower day, spent soaking up each other’s company, jump on a boat over to Antiparos. It’s a smaller, more laid-back island just a 30-minute ferry trip away from Parikia.

4. Rhodes
The best Greek island for couples who like lots of things to do
- Spend the day at one of the islands beach clubs
- Discover the historic Old Town
- Explore the quaint town of Lindos
Rhodes is one of the largest Greek islands, so there’s endless things to see and explore. Out of all the Greek islands I’ve visited, Rhodes surprised me the most.
I had no expectations before I visited, but I came home completely in love with it. It’s one of the best Greek islands for couples thanks to its brilliant restaurants, beautiful old town, and incredible beach clubs.
I’d go as far as to say that Rhodes has the best beach clubs out of any Greek island.
They might not have a huge party atmosphere, but they’re beautifully designed, serve great food, and most importantly, they don’t cost £50 for a bed (I’m looking at you, Mykonos). Plus, there’s plenty of choice across the island.
Best beach clubs in Rhodes
TAMBAKIO
My favourite beach club in Rhodes, Tambakio is a tiny restaurant nestled in St.Paul’s Bay and boasting idyllic views over the crystal-clear water. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, and the setting is utterly romantic.
RONDA
In Rhodes town, you’ll find RONDA, a stunning restaurant and beach bar serving delicious cocktails and club sandwiches (my ultimate holiday combination) on Elli Beach.
KOUNNA BEACH BAR
The most relaxed beach bar out of them all, Kounna offers beautiful views over the stunning Anthony Quinn bay. There’s not much there besides the restaurant and the beach, but that’s all you need.
Things to do in Rhodes
TAKE A DAY TRIP TO LINDOS
If you’re staying in Rhodes Old Town, make sure you visit Lindos. It’s a charming, quintessentially Greek town, full of buzzy restaurants, bars and boutique shops.
If you can, I’d recommend staying overnight as there’s a lot to see here.
Visit the acropolis, spend the day at Tambakio (the beach bar I mentioned before), get lost in the streets of the old town, and spend your evening partying in Lindos by Night, a lively bar that often has a DJ.
There’s regular buses that will take you from Rhodes to Lindos in about an hour, just make sure you check the timetable so you don’t miss the last bus!
Which is exactly what me and my friend did, and we had to find a last-minute airbnb. It actually turned out to be a lovely evening as the owner reminded my of my Grandma and she upgraded us to a room with a huge balcony overlooking the sea.
But ideally I’d have rather been staying back in my Airbnb in Rhodes old town that I’d already paid for….
EXPLORE THE OLD TOWN
Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. So make sure you set aside some time to explore it!
Walk the Street of the Knights up to the palace of the grand master – it was built in the 7th century and has been preserved amazingly over the years.
SEE THE 3 WINDMILLS
The iconic windmills of Rhodes stand on Mandraki Harbour. There was once thought to be many more windmills, used to grind grain that came from ships docking in Rhodes, but today just 3 remain.

5. Syros
The best Greek island for couples who like places off the beaten track.
- Spend slow days at Asteria beach
- Admire the unique Venetian architecture
- Escape the crowds of the nearby islands
If you’re a couple that likes to steer clear of the mainstream, Syros is the perfect place.
It wasn’t on my list of islands to visit when we first started planning our trip, but my friend had visited the year before and raved about how beautiful it was, and in my opinion, there’s no better recommendation than one that comes from someone that knows exactly what you’d enjoy.
So we added it to the itinerary and I’m so glad we did.
On arrival, our Airbnb host, Ioannis, asked where we’d travelled from. We nervously claimed we’d arrived from Mykonos and he looked at us, slightly apprehensively, and said “well, forget everything you experienced in Mykonos, because Syros is completely the opposite”.
He was right, and it was a very welcome rest from the chaos of the previous few days.
Syros is a really unique island thanks to its distinctive architecture. It was built by the Venetians, and their influence is woven amongst the Cycladic buildings.
It feels completely different to the other islands, but that’s what makes it so special. We choose to stay in the capital, Ermoupoli.
The ferry arrives here so it’s easy to get to your accommodation, and it’s well connected to the rest of the island if you want to visit the other beaches and villages.
Spend your time at Ciel beach club, or exploring the charming streets of Ano Syros.
In the evening, book a table at Cantina Analogue, some of the best food we had on our trip. Afterwards, grab a cocktail at Jar. And don’t leave without trying Loukoumia, a sweet similar to Turkish Delight.

6. Naxos
The best Greek island for couples who like good food
- Sample the locally grown food
- Spend your days at one of the stunning sandy beaches
- Hike Mount Zas
Naxos is one of the best Greek islands for couples who like the outdoors. It’s not only the largest of the Cyclades islands, but also the greenest.
It feels very different to the other islands on this list, less “stereotypically” Greek, but its beautiful beaches and excellent food, a lot of which is grown locally on the island, make it a perfect contender for your romantic getaway.
If you like walking, Naxos is an excellent choice. There’s plenty of trails, ruins and villages to explore.
Up for a challenge? Hiking to the summit of Mount Zas (also called Mount Zeus), the highest point of the Cyclades, will take about 3 and a half hours. It’s said to be the birthplace of Zeus, the chief of the Olympian Gods.
After you’ve worked up an appetite from all that exercise, you’re spoilt for choice for food in Naxos.
Although it doesn’t have the same array of fine-dining restaurants as Mykonos and Santorini, it’s famous for growing delicious produce.
Our favourite meal was at Lithos, a small restaurant in the heart of Naxos, serving a curated menu of locally-sourced dishes. After dinner, stop at 520 cocktail bar for a drink with views overlooking the harbour.
Naxos is also one of the windier Greek islands, so if you’re a fan of windsurfing, it’s the perfect place to do it!
Date idea:
Why not try a cooking class? There’s no better place to do it than Naxos, with the abundance of produce grown on the island, you’ll have the freshest ingredients at your fingertips.

7. Santorini
The best Greek island for couples who want the quintessential island experience
- Wander the charming streets of Oia
- Watch the sunset over the caldera
- Grab seafood at Amoudi Bay
It wouldn’t be a list to the best Greek islands for couples without Santorini. Probably the most famous of them all, it’s just as stunning as it looks in pictures, and one of the most romantic places in the world.
Santorini is one of those places that you see all over Instagram, which would usually lead to high expectations and subsequent disappointment. But for me, it lived up to all of my expectations, and more.
The classic blue and white buildings, jaw-dropping views out to the ocean, and charming cobbled streets, it’s pretty hard to beat.
Santorini is also home to the most luxury hotels, many with views over the caldera – a volcanic crater partially submerged by the sea. So if you’re looking to treat yourself to the ultimate couples trip, Santorini’s the place to do it.
Oia is the perfect place to spend the morning and take photos, every corner here is picturesque.
Date idea:
If you’re looking for something special to do in Santorini, why not take a sunset cruise. It offers a completely unique perspective – the chance to look back at the cliff top houses from the ocean. Most cruises will include dinner and unlimited drink.

5 tips for planning the perfect couples holiday to Greece
1. Consider visiting more than one island
Choosing which island to visit is the hardest part about planning a trip to Greece. So don’t choose, and visit a few instead.
I went Greek-island hopping in summer 2021 and it was one of my favourite trips I’ve ever done. It’s really easy to get between islands, and you’ll get to experience so much more of Greece.
2. Book your ferry’s in advance
If you’re travelling between islands, I’d recommend booking your ferry’s ahead of time. That way, there’s nothing to worry about when you’re on holiday.
We booked all of ours through Ferry Hopper and it was so easy. You get a mobile ticket sent to your phone that you just show when you get on the boat.
3. Visit out of peak season
If you can, I’d strongly recommend visiting Greece in May/June or September. The crowd’s will be a lot quieter, the accommodation will be cheaper, and it’ll still be really warm.
4. Book a boat trip
I love being on the water, and a boat tour is the perfect place to see places from a completely different perspective.
Greece has lots of beaches only accessible by boat, so you’ll be experiencing stuff you’d otherwise miss. For the ultimate romantic excursion, book a sunset boat tour.
5. Book restaurants in advance
If you’re visiting in the busier months, try and book your restaurants in advance.
Especially on the more popular islands, places get booked up and you don’t want to be left hungry and wandering the streets trying to find anywhere with a free table.
Trust me, it happened to me in Paros and it wasn’t fun.

If you’re visiting Greece for the first time, I’d recommend visiting Paros. It’s a beautiful island with lots to see, amazing restaurants, and the narrow white streets Greece is famous for. There’s a great selection of hotels, and it’s a more affordable option than Mykonos.
