Little Kook in Athens: Things to Know Before You Visit
Little Kook is Athens most Instagrammable café, so unsurprisingly, it’s a very popular spot. To help you make the most of your visit and avoid the crowds, you’ll find everything you need to know in this handy guide.
A quick TikTok search for “the best things to do in Athens” and Little Kook will come up time and time again. The whimsical fairytale-like café is extremely popular with tourists and is a must-see during your trip.
On my recent trip to Athens with Visit Greece, I was staying just a short walk from Little Kook, so I’ve put together this guide to tell you everything you need to know before you go.
From how to get there to the best time to go to avoid the crowds, this post will ensure you make the most of your visit.
What is Little Kook?
Little Kook is a whimsical, themed café and dessert shop known for its extravagant decorations. It opened in 2015 in a converted neoclassical house and its menu is dedicated to cakes, crepes and sweet treats.
Its decor includes vibrant colors, intricate designs, and themed installations that change throughout the year, often in line with holidays like Christmas, Halloween and Easter.
Not only is the inside of the café decorated, but the surrounding streets adopt the same theme, creating an incredible immersive experience that you can walk through.
Where is Little Kook in Athens?
Little Kook is located in the Psiri neighbourhood of Athens, one of the oldest areas of the city, known for its vibrant atmosphere, narrow streets and thriving nightlife.
You can find Little Kook at Karaiskaki 17, Athina 105 54
How to get to Little Kook
Little Kook is located in the heart of the city, so it’s really easy to find, and there’s a few ways to get there depending on where you’re staying.
by metro
The closest metro station to Little Kook is Monastiraki Metro Station, which is one of the main metro stations in Athens.
From the station, it’s a short 4-minute walk to Little Kook.
BY FOOT
During our trip to Athens, we were staying at Electra Metropolis, which was just a 10-minute walk from Little Kook. This was a huge advantage as it meant we could visit early in the morning, before the crowds arrived.
TAXI/UBER
Uber is available in Athens, although it works slightly differently to other major cities. You can order local taxi’s through the app who can take you directly to Little Kook.
Top tip: Athens is a very busy city and at times there was a lot of traffic, which meant that taxi journeys can take longer than expected. If you want to arrive at Little Kook for a certain time, you might be better taking public transport, or walking.
Why is Little Kook so popular?
It’s not hard to see why Little Kook is so popular with tourists and locals alike, it’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been.
It feels as though you’re experiencing art rather than visiting a café, even the staff dress up according to the theme.
So much thought and attention has been put into making the café and its surrounding streets as magical as possible, and it’s a really popular spot for photographs.
What decorations will I see?
The magical thing about Little Kook is that the decor changes throughout the year. So much of the excitement with visiting is discovering how it’ll be decorated.
We visited Athens in December, so the café was covered in Christmas decorations, but it changes depending on the season. If you’re visiting during Valentines, Halloween or Easter, expect to see Little Kook decorated accordingly.
And even when it’s not a specific holiday, Little Kook will have a theme. In the past themes have included Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean and Mary Poppins.
The only thing that remains consistent is the black dragon that sits on the roof of the cafe – it’s there year-round.
Do you need a reservation?
It’s not immediately obvious how to reserve a table at Little Kook as they don’t have a dedicated website, but there is a phone number and email address on their Facebook page you could contact.
I wouldn’t worry too much about booking ahead of time though, as we walked straight in when we visited.
The café is really deceiving, it’s spread over two floors with plenty of seating, and there’s more tables in the surrounding streets, so even if there’s a queue, you shouldn’t have to wait long for a table.
What’s the food and drink like?
Dedicated to all things sweet, the menu includes crepes, ice cream, cakes, doughnuts and more.
Even if you just go to see the decorations outside, or stop off for a quick drink inside the cafe, it’s not to be missed on your visit to Athens.
Is it family friendly?
Yes, Little Kook is extremely family friendly. In fact, I’d say it’s a must do if you’re bringing children to Athens.
It’s the perfect place to bring children as there’s so much for them to see, and lots to keep them entertained. Plus, the menu is full of sweet treats and drinks like hot chocolate that children will love.
What are the opening hours?
Little Kook is open from 9am-12am daily. Yes, you read that right, it’s open until midnight!
I’d recommend visiting during the day and at night, as it gives you a chance to see the decorations lit up.
When’s the best time to go?
If you want to avoid the crowds and take photographs (like we did), I’d strongly recommend getting to Little Kook around 8:30am.
That way, you can spend 30 minutes taking pictures in the surrounding streets before the cafe even opens. Then, once it opens at 9am, you can head inside and you’ll be almost guaranteed to get a table.
We visited at this time in December and the only people there were the employees setting up for the day, so it was really easy to get a few empty shots.
We passed Little Kook again around Midday during our food tour and unsurprisingly it was packed full of people, so I’d avoid peak times for a more enjoyable experience.
Is Little Kook worth visiting?
Without a doubt, Little Kook is an unmissable experience on your trip to Athens.
It was one of my favourite parts of my trip and I can’t wait to head back to Athens and discover a new theme!
