Es Canutells, Menorca: A Complete Guide to Visiting

Es Canutells is a resort located on the South East of Menorca. It’s home to a small, relatively untouched beach, with bright blue water surrounded by cliffs and caves.

Menorca is home to over 200km of coastline, so you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing which beach to visit. But Es Canutells calm waters, peaceful setting, and free parking right next to the beach make it a brilliant choice.

I visited Menorca last year and spent an afternoon at Es Canutells, so I’ll tell you everything you need to know before you visit, including how to get there, things to do, the facilities available, and where to stay nearby.

About Es Canutells

Es Canutells is actually the name of a small resort on the southeast coast of Menorca, made up of holiday apartments, a hotel, tennis and basketball courts, and a restaurant.

But the beach is the main attraction here. It’s a small, tranquil cove with bright blue water surrounded by large cliffs.

Getting to Es Canutells

Es Canutells is just a 10 minute drive from Mahón, the capital of Menorca, or a 50 minute drive from Ciutadella, which is on the west of the island.

During the summer months (May to October), the number 22 bus runs from Mahón to Es Canutells. A single ticket costs €1.80 and the journey takes around 25 minutes.

You can find the most up to date bus timetable here.

During the winter season, you’ll need to take a taxi or hire a car to get to Es Canutells.

Driving to Es Canutells

The easiest way to get to Es Canutells is to drive as there’s a free car park located right next to the beach.

I’d strongly suggest hiring a car for your trip to Menorca, as public transport around the island can be limited. Having your own car gives you more flexibility to explore the island in your own time.

I hired a car for my trip to Menorca with Discover Cars and it only cost Â£40 for 4 days, so it’s really affordable, especially if you’re travelling in a group!

When to visit Es Canutells

Time of year: The best time to visit Menorca is from May-September. During the summer months the weather is a lot warmer, and all of the restaurants and bars will be open. Summer is the perfect time to visit Es Canutells as the water will be the perfect temperature for swimming in.

Time of day: Unlike Cala Macarelleta where the road shuts when the car park is full, Es Canutells is accessible at any time. Even if the car park is full you can park on the street, so you don’t need to worry too much about when you arrive.

Things to do

Unsurprisingly, the main activities at Es Canutells are sunbathing and swimming.

It’s quite a unique beach as there’s a long boardwalk that stretches around the side of the cliff. It’s the perfect sunbathing spot as you can jump from the boardwalk straight into the water.

To find it you need to head down the stairs to the left of the restaurant and follow the beach round.

Kayaking

During the summer months, you can rent a kayak at Es Canutells beach from Kayak Canutells. Their stand is located in the car park so you won’t miss it.

You can choose from single and double kayaks, as well as paddle boards, or you can book onto an excursion where you’ll tour the surrounding coastline and caves with a small group of kayakers.

Walking

From Es Canutells, you can join the Camí de Cavalls, a historic trail that runs over 100 miles around the coastline of Menorca.

The route is split into sections so you can do shorter walks in between beaches. You can walk from Es Canutells to Cala en Porter (another beautiful beach) in around 1 hour.

Food and drink

Es Canutells is a fairly secluded beach, and there’s only one restaurant in the resort. I didn’t eat there and the reviews don’t look great, so make sure you bring food with you. Or, head back into Mahón for lunch.

There’s only one small restaurant here, set back slightly from the beach, and there’s no shops, so make sure you bring everything you need (and take it with you when you leave!).

Where to stay in Es Canutells

There’s only one hotel in Es Canutells – Grupotel Mar de Menorca, as well as a selection of apartments to rent.

Because Es Canutells is a very quiet place, with no restaurants and bars, I wouldn’t recommend staying there. Instead, I’d base yourself elsewhere on the island and visit Es Canutells for the day.

Where to stay in Menorca

I stayed at Villa Le Blanc during my trip to Menorca and it was the perfect base for exploring the island.

It’s located on the southern coast of Menorca, a 30 minute drive from Es Canutells. The rooms are spacious and modern with plenty of natural light, and the hotel has stunning views of the sea.

There’s 6 restaurants and bars at the hotel, 2 swimming pools, a spa, and free valet parking. It’s the perfect place for a couples holiday, or a trip with your friends. This hotel has everything you need and will make your trip to Menorca even more special.

Final thoughts

Es Canutells is a must visit beach in Menorca. It’s easily accessible from the rest of the island, only a 15 minute drive from Mahón. and 10 minutes from the airport. Parking is free for as long as you need.

The beach has plenty of space for sunbathing. And its calm, bright blue waters are perfect for swimming.

There aren’t many facilities at Es Canutells (bring drinks and snacks with you), but during the summer months you can rent kayaks and paddle boards.
