Eden Locke: A Budget-Friendly Edinburgh Hotel
So you’ve chosen Edinburgh as your next getaway destination. A great choice – what it lacks in sunshine it makes up for in beauty; the architectural consideration here is a rare find. Next step: deciding where to stay. There are Edinburgh hotels to suit every budget, from The Balmoral and The Witchery to a Premier Inn and Travelodge. But if you’re looking for something affordable and still beautiful (no blue carpets here, thank you), let me introduce you to Eden Locke.
Locke has a number of locations across the UK, Ireland and Germany and is the ideal blend of hotel and serviced apartment. This stunning Edinburgh aparthotel is found in the heart of the New Town.
Getting to Eden Locke
Trains from London Kings Cross will get you to Edinburgh Waverley in around 4 and a half hours. Or you could be there in an hour and a half if you jump on a plane at London Gatwick. From the train station, Eden Locke is a short 15-minute walk, or 25 minutes in a taxi from the airport.
If you’re driving, there’s no on-site parking at Eden Locke, but the NCP at Castle Terrace is a 10-minute walk away.
First impressions
Upon arrival, you’re greeted by a beautiful Georgian facade. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself in Mayvn. It’s one of Edinburgh’s most popular café – serving breakfast bites, sandwiches and a selection of drinks. Check yourself in with the friendly front-of-house staff and get settled in your room.
The rooms
There are 72 apartments in total, varying from studios to one-bedroom suites. Each one boasts a soft, pastel colour palette – think pale greens, pinks and blues. The rooms have everything to make you feel at home – a kitchen and dining area, washing machine and even a cocktail shaker if you fancy a big night in. I opted for the ‘Locke Studio’ and it was far bigger than most hotel rooms, with separate areas for eating and lounging.
It’s a design-led space; a theme that continues throughout the communal areas. Mayvn is filled with plants, rattan chairs and gold accents, and the large windows of this Georgian listed building flood the room with light. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, whether you’re catching up friends or taking a solo trip.
Things to do near Eden Locke
Probably the best thing about this hotel is its location. Once I’d dropped my bags off, I headed out to explore the city. I’ve been to Edinburgh many times before, but each time I discover something new. It’s one of few cities in the world I could move to tomorrow and not be homesick. My favourite thing to do in Edinburgh is wander the streets and see where I end up, and Eden Locke is the perfect base.
Just a few steps from the front door and you’re in the hustle and bustle of the city, with Edinburgh castle looming over you. A two-minute stroll, and you’ll be hurrying down Princes Street, immersing yourself in the cities sights and sounds like a local.

Eden Locke price
It’s rare that a design-led hotel in the centre of the city would also be affordable, but I paid £90 a night. This meant I was able to stay for longer than usual, and spend my money on food, drinks and exploring Edinburgh.
