The Best Romantic Hotels in Somerset: Bath
Bath is one of the most romantic places in the UK, let alone in Somerset. There’s something for every couple here, from exploring the charming streets to relaxing in the open-air thermae spa. Plus, it’s home to some incredible restaurants that’ll make date night extra special.
The Yard in Bath
Bath has been crying out for a beautiful boutique hotel for a while, and The Yard fits the bill perfectly. Once a coaching inn, it’s been revived into a boutique hotel in the heart of the city. There’s 14 king-sized bedrooms, each with REN toiletries, Netflix, a Roberts radio & Nespresso machines. The devil really is in the detail here – you’ll get breakfast hung on your door each morning. Or, if you fancy something heartier, you can help yourself to breakfast in the cafe for an additional charge.
I checked into Room 8 last year, when the hotel was newly opened. It’s the biggest room in the hotel – with a freestanding tub in the bathroom and private terrace – the perfect choice for a romantic weekend. We spent the evening sitting outside looking over the rooftops of Bath – it was magic!

- In the heart of Bath
- Breakfast hamper included
No 15 by Guesthouse Bath
GuestHouse is an independent hotel brand started by 3 brothers, on a mission to create unique, “wonder-filled” places to stay. Bath was their first opening, in a stunning Georgian townhouse on the sought-after Great Pulteney Street. Its location alone makes this one of the most romantic hotels in Somerset. There’s 36 bedrooms ranging from small guest rooms at the top of the house with views over Bath, to The Hideout – which is more like an apartment than a hotel room, complete with its own steam room and hot tub. All rooms come with Nespresso kits, Dyson hairdryers, 100 Acres toiletries, and a turntable with records as standard.
GuestHouse is a great choice for the whole family – most of the rooms are dog-friendly and there’s plenty of thoughtful details in the bedrooms such as books, polaroid cameras, and tipi hideaways to keep children entertained. There’s also a nanny service available if you fancy a few hours on your own!
There’s a brilliant restaurant on-site, as well as a bar, private dining options and if you’re in the mood for a picnic, the hotel will sort a hamper out for you.
- Dog-friendly
- Great for kids
- 9.0* “Superb” rating
Where to eat in Bath
Bath is a foodie hotspot and there’s so many incredible restaurants to discover. But my absolute favourite has to be The Walcot it’s perfect for date night or a special occasion. It’s a former bakery split across two floors – upstairs is home to the restaurant, serving wholesome and hearty food. If you’re going for dinner, you have to order the beef croquettes – they were to die for. Downstairs, you’ll find a cosy cocktail bar as well as private-members club – Bread and Jam. Make sure you book a table at the bar afterwards, it’s the perfect place to spend your evening.
Beckford Bottle Shop is a wine merchant and restaurant found on a quiet cobbled street in Bath. The menu is designed for sharing, and best enjoyed alongside the wine, which is also available to buy in their shop. Try and get a seat downstairs if you can, the room is dimly lit and perfectly cosy. It’s one of the best restaurants in Somerset.
For a quick lunch, don’t miss Dos Dedos. It’s a small Mexican cantina serving up taco’s and excellent guacamole.
Homewood Hotel & Spa
If you’re looking for the ultimate romantic getaway, look no further than Homewood Hotel & Spa. When I first visited Somerset when I was 16, this is where I stayed. And although I was with my mum at the time, it’s the the perfect hotel for a couples retreat. If you’re looking for total relaxation within easy reach of the city (it’s a 25-minute drive), you’ll find it here. This Georgian building boasts 21 bedrooms, and whilst they’re all stunning, the Hot Tub Suite is ideal for a romantic trip. It comes with a private terrace and hot tub, as well as a large bathroom with a shower and a separate bath.
The hotel’s grounds are gorgeous and there’s an on-site spa that includes a sauna, steam room, heated outdoor pool, and a hydrotherapy pool, set within the original garden walls.

- Stunning spa with outdoor pool
- Brilliant restaurant on-site
The best romantic hotels in Somerset for good food
If you’re idea of the perfect romantic weekend is eating lots of good food, then these hotels will be right up your street.
Number One Bruton
For a town that’s home to less than 3,000 people, Bruton has its fair share of great restaurants and hotels. Top of that list is Number One Bruton, a stunning Georgian townhouse converted into a 12-bedroom boutique hotel. There’s plenty of character and history here – the building was formerly a coaching inn and has been in use for over 500 years.
There are 3 different room types; cosy cottages, colourful townhouses and The Forge, a 12th-century building with a separate terrace overlooking the courtyard. Clashing prints, original features and unique artwork make these bedrooms amongst my favourite rooms I’ve stayed in. The finishing touches really elevate this place – on arrival, each guest receives a care package full of local Westcombe cheddar, Bristol-based tea and coffee and organic milk from the Dairy in Bruton. Breakfast is included and extremely generous -choose from granola, yoghurt, freshly baked brioche, soft boiled eggs, homemade jams, ham, juices and more.
In keeping with their locally-sourced theme, Number One Bruton is home to Osip, a farm-to-table restaurant found in the old ironmonger’s shop in the hotel. I dined here when I stayed at the hotel earlier in the year, and it was some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Only a few weeks before my stay, the restaurant had been named as number one in Square Meal’s Top 100 Restaurants.
- Breakfast included
- Award-winning restaurant
- Idyllic location
At The Chapel
Just down the road from Number One, At The Chapel is, as the name suggests, a converted 17th-century chapel. Describing themselves as a “restaurant with rooms” the emphasis is on the food here, and it’s absolutely delicious. The main dining area serves up seasonal dishes, sourced locally. The menu changes regularly – and there’s everything from sourdough pizza fresh out of the wood-fired oven to wood-roasted porchetta. There’s also an on-site bakery serving up fresh bread, cakes, pastries and biscuits. The coffee’s pretty good too – so it’s a great place to begin your day of exploring Somerset.
The rooms are stripped back, letting the original features of this beautiful building do the talking. But the bathrooms are the showstopper – huge stained glass windows flood the room with light. If you can, go for rooms 2, 3, 5 or 8 for the added luxury of a bath – the perfect addition for a romantic weekend.
- Located in the heart of Bruton
- Events on throughout the week
- Brilliant food
The Pig Near Bath
Priding itself on its 25-mile menu, The Pig serves up some of the most special food in Somerset. Most of the vegetables used on the menu are grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden, complete with Smoke House, a wildflower orchard, fruit cages, a greenhouse and beehives, and free for guests to explore. What’s not grown on site is sourced locally, the majority from within 25 miles of the hotel. This means an ever-changing menu that reflects the changing landscape of Somerset.
If the food alone isn’t enough to make you want to book this hotel, you’ll definitely be tempted by the cosy bedrooms, some within the walls of the kitchen garden, or its picturesque location within the Mendip Hills. It’s setting makes it the perfect choice for a romantic hotel in Somerset. You’re only a short drive from Bath if you want to head out for the day. And if you don’t fancy doing much – there’s a potting shed in the garden which offers massages and treatments.
I took my Mum on a tour of Somerset earlier in the year and The Pig was by far her favourite hotel. So if it’s good enough for my Mum, I know you’ll love it too!
- Exceptional, locally-sourced food
- Treatment room within the grounds
- Beautiful cosy bedrooms
The Langford Inn
There’s few things more romantic than cosying up in a converted pub, and The Langford Inn has been around since the 17th-century, so there’s plenty of traditional features, such as the wooden beams in the bedroom. What I love most about staying in a pub, is that you don’t have to go far for a good meal. And The Langford’s won several awards for its food, with a huge focus on local ingredients.
Located on the egde of the Mendip hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s the perfect place to stay if you want to spend the weekend in nature. Plus, you’re really close to Cheddar Gorge and the Wookey Hole caves.
The best romantic hotels in Somerset for interiors
The Bradley Hare
A traditional village pub with rooms, The Bradley Hare is an interiors dream, largely thanks to James Thurstan Waterworth, the co-director who previously looked after European design at Soho House. Each of the 12 bedrooms feature a mix of antique pieces and modern touches. Expect freestanding tubs, nook beds and clashing prints. Downstairs, the pub offers an eclectic menu using seasonal produce and local beers. Their approach to waste is refreshing – each ingredient is treated with care, if it’s not part of dinner, it gets fermented, pickled or cured.
Set within the quaint village of Maiden Bradley, you’re in the heart of an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, so pack your walking boots and get exploring. If you prefer retail therapy and local food, it’s only a short drive from the idyllic Somerset towns of Frome, Wells and Bruton.
- Excellent food served in the pub
- Located near Somerset’s prettiest towns
- 8.7* “Fabulous” rating
Babington House
Part of the Soho House group, Babington House is a Grade II-listed manor nestled within 18 acres of Somerset countryside just a short drive from Bath. As with all of their properties, the design is exceptional, and there’s every type of room – from a cosy bedroom in the attic to a walled garden room, complete with a log burner, outdoor jacuzzi and freestanding bath.
There’s endless activities here to keep you entertained – a padel court, tennis, cricket, a gym, two pools, and 5 restaurants. Plus, they serve complimentary afternoon tea every single day. This is the place to relax and recharge, think of it as Soho Farmhouse‘s sleepier little sister.
*You’ll need to be a member (or be with someone who is) to stay here.
- 5 restaurants within the hotel
- 2 swimming pools
- 30 minutes from Bath
The best romantic hotels in Somerset for things to do
The Newt
From the husband and wife duo behind Babylonstoren in South Africa, The Newt is a truly exceptional place to spend the night and undoubtedly one of the most romantic hotels in Somerset. It’s a sprawling country estate, extending over 900 acres, and everything is immaculate. The rooms are undoubtedly the most stunning on this list (save the best ’til last!), and the bathrooms alone are bigger than my flat.
There’s endless activities across the estate – from the spa complete with hammam and indoor-outdoor pool, to a cyder tasting session sampling local Somerset cyder. Staying at The Newt also gets you access to the gardens (which you need to be a member to enter otherwise) – and they’re the perfect place to spend the day.
Unsurprisingly, this comes at a cost, and The Newt is definitely a special occasion kind of place. But if you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Somerset that you’ll never forget, The Newt is it.
- Incredible spa
- Endless activities
- 5* hotel
